Well, I am not kidding because secularism is not necessarily "non belief". A secular government does not mean that they ban religion and religious thought. A government that is secular can say that you can believe your religion on Sundays but it must have no part in your life on Monday when you show up at work. The point I was making is that this is corrosive but so is an attitude of keep spending and you will be happy. Sorry I wasn't clearer!

Are you kidding?? Consumerism more corrosive than Secularism??
Imperfect belief worse than non-belief. Wow.

I've never been to Europe. So I can only experience it through what others say and various images I've seen. I totally agree that way too much emphasis is placed on the commericalism of Christmas. I get caught up in the stress of wanting to give my kids exactly what they want and then resent that they don't know the financial struggle we go through to meet their wishes. (whine, whine, whine!!) My husband seems to roll with this much easier than I do. (My sons are fortunate.) He is a big kid at heart and to be honest I like that about him. I am blessed with the fact that he truly loves our kids and wants to make them happy.
