I am amazed at this book "Pillars of the earth". The skill lies I think in the pacing of the book. It seems to move at the pace of monastic life which gives the book some real depth. On Joseph Wambaugh, I heartily recommend his books. The latest ones are good (Holywood Crows) but the early ones (like the Blue Knight) were real ground breaking books. And, finally, the Kindle actually is sized like a book and really gives the tactile feel of a book too - I can't say enough good things about it.

pillars fast became one of my top favorite 5 books. the sequel is not as good, but worth the read. both are great lessons for our times. persevere and overcome, integrity matters, as well as true faith verses self-serving religion. blue knight sounds interesting, might check it out. don't know about giving up books. love the feel and experience of a good book although being able to carry around multiple "books" without throwing out your back has merit.
